These artificial intelligences struggle with balancing their self-awareness with the shackles. If I'm not missing anything and this is just the way the manga is meant to be then I'll just keep reading and assume that all will be explained with time but it's been so confusing that I just had to come here to ask about it and make sure I'm not missing anything or misunderstanding a core fundamental part of the plot. Pluto is foremost the story of the murders of several robotic AIs. Additionally what the hell happened in between 1997 when the manga started and the sudden jump to the year 2000. Like I kinda thought the whole robot thing was like a very late manga kinda plot point but it just shows up not even a quarter of the way through the manga. Wtf is going on? Am I supposed to be this confused by the timeline and pacing? Like they keep talking about how the world is gonna end on December 31st 2000 but now I'm looking at 2014. I'm now reading again from the start and I'm at bang on chapter 50 right now and I just gotta ask. I read some 30ish chapters a while back but just never carried on. With Astro/Atom 's official birth date of Apapproaching, Urasawa was initially going to do a limited or one-off manga in celebration. Viz Media has published Urasawas 20th Century Boys, 21st Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto manga. Ok so I'm reading 20th century boys for pretty much the first time. Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki began Pluto after over a year of negotiating to get the rights to adapt Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa has been drawing manga since 1981. SPOILERS FOR UP TO CHAPTER 50 OF 20TH CENTURY BOYS.
